Perhaps you want to live debt free. Maybe you want your home paid off before retirement. These are two good reasons why making an extra monthly payment might make sense.

For some paying off their mortgage early is part of their investment plan. It is a no risk way to save money. Other no risk options such as a savings account probably have a much lower rate than your mortgage.

If your savings account is your emergency money, consider opening up a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC). This will give you some comfort to not keep as large a balance in your savings, and instead use your extra savings to pay down the higher interest rate mortgage. Should you need the money for an emergency, you can always withdraw it from the HELOC, but remember to start paying that back right away too.

Keep in mind there is no required amount you have to add per month. The more you add, the faster your mortgage goes away, and the more interest you save. However, the best strategy is to add what you are comfortable with.
