Neighborhood Interview from a neighbor who lives there.

How long have you lived in Kaimalino?

I've lived here since 2002. Before that, I lived in Beachside for about six months when I came to the island. I actually moved here as a rental for a little bit and purchased in 2003.

What factors influenced your decision to move into the Kaimalino neighborhood?

I really like Kailua because it has a small-town feel. We thought about Honolulu but for us, it's a little bit too busy. I know for some people they like that. Kailua just really seemed centrally located also. I actually didn't know about the Kaimalino neighborhood, but I learned about it and then I realized it's a pretty nice neighborhood. So I decided to buy here. I think what influenced my decision was the closeness to the ocean, closeness to Kailua Beach, and being able to get to the ocean and do activities that I like either at the beach or on the ocean.

How does where you live before compare?

I lived on the mainland so it's a big difference. Of course, back there we had snow in the winter and I wasn't close to the ocean, so I didn't see the ocean at all. I really like the lifestyle out here. I enjoy the weather. I enjoy the year-round ocean events. I think it's a little bit more laid back, too. On the mainland it's a little bit more work-oriented. Where here, it's a little more oriented to having some fun, too.

So you can say it's a lot more stressful on the mainland than in Kailua?

Yeah. I mean, you can have stress wherever you live--some stress. But yeah, I would say less stressful. On the mainland, I would wear a suit and tie everyday--that type of thing. And now, I can wear shorts and sandals and things like that. I haven't had a tie on since I left.

How is traffic in and around the neighborhood? For example, getting to stores, getting to downtown, etc.?

Actually that's another nice thing about living in Kaimalino. All the streets are kind of a dead end on the cul de sac, so we don't get any through traffic, which is great. Most of the traffic we get are people from the neighborhood. And then you have Safeway and a shopping center about 2 minutes away. So you can get there really quick. There's never any traffic, and even getting in and out of town. If you go rush hour, you're going to hit some traffic on the way in once you get into town, and you're going to hit some traffic on the way back. But in general, H-3, for example, never has traffic jams. And the Pali might have a little bit of back up at the light when you're coming back at rush hour. And then getting into Kailua town--not Honolulu town--never has traffic. So those are some of things I like about in a small town. There is very little traffic.

How is your commute to work?

I work from home so I don't have a commute, but I can tell you that people here like to jump on the H-3 which gets them to Pearl City, Pearl Harbor, Tripler, or places like that. Or other people jump on the Pali. There's a lot less traffic coming from the windward side into town than there is coming from the west side into town. Same thing going back out. So actually, if you can live in this area, it's a great way to beat the traffic and not have such a long commute. Even though I work from home, I'm aware of the commuting times.

Any concerns with crime in your neighborhood?

Unfortunately, yes. Nothing violent, but we have break-ins. We have a neighborhood watch. We have an email that goes out to all the neighbors, so anytime something happens in the neighborhood, everyone's aware of it--what to look out for, and that type of thing. They did put in some hidden cameras at the exit to the neighborhood, so it does get license plates and things. So for example, if a house gets broken into at 1:00AM on Tuesday night, they can look at the tape at 1:30AM and if they see someone speeding out the neighborhood that is not familiar, it's a pretty good chance that it could be that person. So, yes, there is concern about robbery. We've been OK, but definitely some of the neighbors have had stuff taken. If you leave your car door unlocked, or your house door unlocked, and some things that are easy access, you could have a problem. The neighborhood over where our friends live is having the same type of problem too, that's Kalaheo Hillside. They did get robbed and they got an alarm, a dog, and everything because they're really concerned about it because it happens over there too.

I don't think there's a place in the world that doesn't have any crime, even if they say their crime rate is 0%. Yeah, it would be nice. The thing about this neighborhood is even though there is crime like that, you can feel safe walking around at night. I know in the mainland there are some cities and places that you do not want to be on the street at night just walking around. But here, really, any time of the night, you'll feel really safe. It's well lit, and other than the theft, it's a pretty comfortable neighborhood to walk around in.

Do you have police patrolling at night, watching over the neighborhood?

No. Only when Obama is in town, then you see some police cars and other things. But normally, you don't have police or anything in the neighborhood. Once in a while, they come through. But when Obama is here--because he's in the Beachside neighborhood, which is right across the way--they kind of patrol over here too because you can see his house and they want to make sure there's nothing fishy going on.

So how are the schools?

There's the Aikahi School, which is the grade school. That school is supposed to be pretty good. I know a lot of neighbors who have started their kids at the Aikahi School and then transferred to Punahou where Obama went, so it's a very nice private school. Other private schools, there's Le Jardin, which is in Kailua, and a lot of kids from this area go there. But honestly, a lot of kids from this neighborhood will--if they go to the elementary level public school--usually transfer once they get into the upper elementary level or the high school level to go to a private school. Honestly, the high schools are not considered that great. For the parents who have the means, they usually will send their kids to private high schools.

What is the noise level like? Any excessive noise from traffic, planes, neighbors, etc.

We're not far from the Kaneohe Marine Base here. We're about right up against the marine base. So we have helicopters flying over our heads, maybe 3 times a day. On some days, for a while we have none. Maybe the most you'll hear is 3 or 4 times a day of the helicopter overhead. We don't hear the jets as much here. I know there are jets that take off at the marine base. We hear them sometimes but they're not quite as loud as probably in the Kaneohe Bay Area, and they usually fly out over the ocean so it's not quite as noisy. So you do have that noise from the marine base.

Traffic noise is not a problem--I still get a little bit of traffic. The neighbors are all very quiet here. So at night, if there's no airplanes flying or anything, it's usually very quiet. We do get some muffled gun shots from the marine base when they're training, but it's not loud. It sounds like popcorn or something, because we're not close enough, but you can hear it in the distance. Once in a rare while, they shoot off these big guns either from a ship or on land, I'm not sure. That's pretty loud. You can feel and almost see the shockwave going through the house. If you get that once every three months, that's about it.

What are the things that you like best about your neighborhood?

I like that there's no through traffic, but I think the thing that I like best about it is easy access to Turtle Cove. So I can walk down with my son and we can go in there. I can take a kayak down there and go in. I have a couple different kayaks I can use. I like that we don't have to get in a car to get to the ocean. We probably get in the ocean more because we don't have to jump in a car to get to it. So that's some of the things I really like. And everything else I like. The neighbors are good. It's quiet. There's not a lot of through traffic. It's a pretty good neighborhood.

What are the things you would like to change about your neighborhood?

One thing that everyone would like to change is that we had three tsunami warnings in the last 3 years. Luckily, we never got a tsunami that did anything. But just getting a warning is kind of--you know, you end up staying up all night, most of the night. It takes a lot out of you, just evacuating and stuff. I don't know why we're getting more lately. I've lived here since 2002, and it's only in the last 3 years that we got three. I don't know if it's their equipment or what. So it would be nice not to get so many tsunami warnings.

The other thing would be is we're a high maintenance neighborhood because we're so close to the ocean. We get a lot of salt spray. Everything that is metal will rust very quickly. Window air conditioners, for example, will be very rusted within 6 months, and anything else--light fixtures that are metal--just anything that's metal. Even stainless steel stuff rust. We got new stainless steel knives and within a week I saw rust on it. It's a neighborhood where you get a lot of rust. There's a lot of upkeep. So that's the other challenge of this neighborhood. But I don't know, that could happen all over the island, but I assume, let's say in Mililani where it's centrally located, probably has less salt sprays so things rusts a lot slower.

Well you probably have to start using ceramic knives then.

Yeah, we have to look that up. Exactly. You do really have to change what you use. You really have to think about what you use here because of that. For air conditioners, I went to indoor air conditioners instead of window, because that way it's a lot more protected. You do think about other things like that, like, "Okay, we can't get this because it's going to rust." We go through a lot of microwaves--they rust and then they have a problem. My computer lasts at most 2 years and then it's rusted. I have to upgrade those. That's just part of living in the neighborhood.

So pretty expensive, you would say?

The house price, of course, you could see from the website. But yes, it's expensive because you have all this upkeep, maintenance, replacing things, and stuff like that. You pay the price to live close to the ocean in terms of maintenance and upkeep, definitely.

What are the neighbors like?

The neighbors are great. We have some vacation rentals in this neighborhood, but we never hear any problems with them--parties or anything loud like that because it's mostly bed and breakfast. So usually we don't hear anything, because if it gets loud, the owner will say something. And the neighbors are all friendly. We walk the dog a lot and we get to meet a lot of neighbors by walking the dog a few times a day. Everyone is really family, so I really like the neighbors.

Any favorite nearby restaurants?

There's Willow Tree, which is a good Korean restaurant at the Aikahi Park Shopping Center. We eat there a lot. There's L&L Drive Thru which is also there. So those are the two closest ones. Of course, for the kids, there's Burger King. But you wouldn't list it as a favorite restaurant, but for something quick, it works well. For pizza, my personal favorite is Domino's, because I eat gluten-free pizzas. They have gluten-free freely delivered to this area. And then there's New Chinese Garden for Chinese food and there's Assaggio for Italian food. There's Saigon Noodle House which is good for Vietnamese food, and that's kind of well known. All these are in Kailua. And then you have Buzz's Steakhouse, which is steak and seafood, right across from Kailua Beach, which is a popular spot also and a really nice setting.

Sounds like a variety of culinary treats out there.

Yeah. I shouldn't forget about Boots & Kimo's, famous for pancakes in the morning. They usually have a line. Sometimes people wait an hour or more just to eat there in the morning.

Any favorite nearby places to shop?

We go to our local Safeway for a lot of things. We just got a Whole Foods in Kailua, which is really nice. But we don't have any big box stores on this side, other than Sears at the Windward Mall. So if you want to go to like a Walmart, Kmart, Costco, or Sam's Club, you've got to drive over to the other side of the island. So that's kind of a pain, but we're going to get a Target here, and a lot of people don't like it because they think it's going to cause too much traffic. But at least we'll have a store really close to get some of the things you would get from a Walmart or other places like that. Honestly, I do most of my shopping online. So for me, other than emergency items, I get almost everything online anyway.

Are there any events in your neighborhood or nearby that you'd like to take part in?

We just did a Halloween parade. Every Halloween, the neighborhood has a parade for the kids. They march around the loop in the neighborhood, showing off their costumes and all the adults go with them. So that's fun. Every Christmas, we have a Christmas party. They block off a part of the street in the area and you have a party. That's more of an adult party. You get to meet your neighbors, but of course, there are a lot of kids there too. And then we have the Kailua town parade. That's not just our neighborhood, but all of Kailua. That's fun. On July 4th, I believe. I think for our neighborhood, it's just Halloween, Christmas, and then the Kailua town. Those are the main events.

Would you recommend buying a house in your neighborhood?

Yes, definitely. If someone's okay with the maintenance and everything else works out good for them--the location and everything, because you can take advantage of the having the ocean access really close. And it's a great neighborhood for all the reasons I mentioned. So yeah, I would.
