Neighborhood Interview from a neighbor who lives there. |
How long have you lived in the Lower Manoa neighborhood? I'd say about 7 or 8 years. What factors influenced your decision to move to your neighborhood? Several, actually. They have very good schools, as opposed to sending a child to public school, or as opposed to Kalihi, other places, or even the Waikiki area. I like the wetness. I like a lot of rain, the greenery. It's kind of lush, not dry like a desert. Even the library is okay, it's a little old. Now there's a new one. The location and the contents of the public library there is nice. It has a nice homely feel to it. If you live in Waikiki, you live there, but it's not homely. It's very brick-and-mortar and you have to look for grass. In Manoa, the grass looks for you. Also, the people who tend to live in Manoa tend to be more education-oriented. I'm not saying they're smarter or make more money. They're into some type of education. They're usually higher educated or doing something in academia, research, teaching, or something of the sort. The proximity to UH is okay, but not that important to me. Rating from a scale from 0 to 10, maybe 4. But I do like that aspect though. The people in academia are basically there in Manoa is because the University is there, in my opinion. The people who tend to live there tend to have higher incomes, which means people tend to afford to maintain their properties. That was an important factor for me. That's kind of a little bit selfish I guess, but it is a factor. If I have a problem, I hope my neighbor thinks that I can afford it and take care of it. How does where you lived before compare? Before I lived in Manoa, I lived in a very small apartment that I rented in Beverly Hills, California. You can't really compare that to Manoa, because it's like comparing fruits and nuts. It's very different. How is traffic in and around the neighborhood? For example, getting to stores, downtown, commuting to work, etc.? It's pretty convenient. Sometimes I drive, walk, bike, or take the bus at a variety of times. On a scale of 0-10, I'd probably say a 9.5. No matter how you look at it, it's pretty convenient. So you seldom encounter heavy traffic? That's the nice thing about that area. It does flow nicely in and around the area. Not as where I live, but around the whole Manoa area, traffic flows really well. Do you have any concerns with crime in the neighborhood? No. That is one of the things I looked at before I decided to move there. As opposed to Kalihi, Waikiki, or Makiki, or in those vicinities. Overall, it's pretty low, but it's really low compared to those 3 places. Another interesting thing, if you go to other places on the island, you see security guards everywhere. In Manoa, you see a few security guards. You don't see them as much as in other places on the island. That was an important decision for me. I'd say it's probably extremely safe. What is the noise level like? Any excessive noise from traffic, planes, neighbors, etc.? No unusual urban noise. It's relatively quiet, peaceful. The only exceptions are graduation around December and May around UH Manoa, but that's to be expected, typical, and only temporary. It's really no big deal. It's not really a factor at all. It's pretty peaceful. What are the things you like best about your neighborhood? First thing, I like my neighbors, for a variety of reasons. If you have more education, you tend to be easier to get along with, and tend to be more understanding about neighborhood issues, housing, and parking issues. Another interesting thing that I noticed when I was talking with my friends (one lives in Kalihi, one in Waikiki, one in Makiki, one in Pearl City, one in Makaha, and one in Liliha), we talked about how neighbors resolve issues--whether it be neighborly, housing, or parking conflicts. In Manoa the people who live there tend to deal with conflict resolution much better, than other places. What are the things that you would like to change about your neighborhood? One thing I would change about it, and this has bugged me, is I would have more sidewalks. I don't understand what the deal is in Manoa not having these sidewalks, hardly. That's kind of aggravating, actually. There can be some sidewalks here, some spots here and there, but I like a regular system of sidewalks. What are your favorite nearby restaurants? I work in the King Street area, if that is considered nearby. Baikikoes, Moiliili area. It's a place I often go. I like the curry restaurant on the corner. The Japanese Curry House is just as good. I also go to the one next door, The Mediterraneo. I eat there some 3-4 times a month. There's one a lot further down past the Moiliili library is a Thai restaurant, right across the street from Moiliili library, and it's really good. I go to a coffee shop a lot, Glazer's. I do go maybe twice in a month for a little restaurant right up the University, a Vietnamese restaurant. It's delicious. Right in Manoa, when I want pizza, which is 3-4 times a month, I always have Boston's Pizza. It's pretty good for pizza. What about favorite nearby places to shop? You've got to love Ala Moana market place. The whole area is a wonderful place to shop. There are flower shops, food shops, restaurants, Long's, McDonald's. There's a post office inside, laundromat, banks are there. That is a nice place. Are there any events in your neighborhood or nearby that you'd like to take part in? Sometimes, we would have a neighborhood watch and a neighborhood clean up, and we would take part in them. When I moved in, I was treated pretty nicely. I was relatively one of the younger people living in that area, but they're still pretty respectful and very nice to me, and accommodating. Would you recommend buying a house in your neighborhood? Absolutely. Especially if you can afford it. |
