How long have you lived in the Kapiolani neighborhood?
I can't remember if it's 4 or 5 years, but at least 4 years.
What factors influenced your decision to move to your neighborhood?
The Ala Wai park is nearby. I work at the University from time to time. All the transportation is convenient. Those are all the factors. I'm a contractor, so most of my work is right around town, Waikiki area, so it's easy to get to every place.
How does where you lived before compare?
I was over in Waikiki. I actually like Waikiki too, you know. I would have to say that I miss that kind of energy of Waikiki. Actually, maybe I prefer Waikiki.
So basically the only reason why you moved from Waikiki to Kapiiolani is the convenience for work?
No. It's economic. Waikiki is a bit too spendy for me.
How is the traffic in and around the neighborhood? For example, getting to stores, downtown, commuting to work, etc.?
Traffic is a breeze. Absolutely no problem. Of course, unless you go at 7:30AM trying to get to downtown, you could have a problem. But traffic is no problem.
Do you have any concerns with crime in the neighborhood?
There is a little bit. There is that park on Isenberg, there's some activity there. But I have never had a personal problem with crime. Just get to walk through some questionable areas. I've seen a few people running away from some situations.
How are the schools in the area?
I don't have kids so I'm not familiar. From time to time, I work at the University, so that school is good. Then they have that middle school, but I have no idea how good or bad that school is.
What is the noise level like? Any excessive noise from traffic, planes, neighbors, etc.?
That's the one thing that this neighborhood beats Waikiki on. It is quiet. No noise.
What are the things you like best about your neighborhood?
Just like I said, there's almost no traffic on the streets, so parking is easy. The neighbors are all friendly. It's just a friendly environment.
What are the things that you would like to change about your neighborhood?
I wish there were more grocery stores nearby. The closest one is Longs. So you have to go up about a mile and a half in either direction to get to a store. That's kind of a drag.
Aside from being friendly, what are your neighbors like?
They're always out walking their dogs, so they always seem to stop and talk, so we get to know each other pretty well.
Do you have any favorite nearby restaurants?
The Willows is right across the street. That's a terrific place. Then there's Subway right up half a block away. Down to Earth. There's a few good places to eat. All kinds of fast food--Burger King is there, some Indian restaurants right on the King, right around the corner.
What about favorite nearby places to shop?
For appliances, I have to go to Ala Moana to shop. If it's easy food, then I spend most of my time in Longs. Other than that, I go up to Foodland on either side (Foodland Beretania or Foodland Ala Moana.)
Are there any events in your neighborhood or nearby that you like to take part in?
I don't. I don't think I've ever been apprised of any neighborhood events either. So I don't have any information on that.
Would you recommend buying a house in your neighborhood?
Oh, yeah. It's a great neighborhood. Like I said, you get to know the neighbors so you feel safe and secure. Everyone watches out for everyone else. Yeah, it's a great place.
