Crime in Hawaii

Remember that wherever you go in the United States, crime tends to be higher than average in metropolitan areas. Also, it is typical for crime to be highly concentrated in a few, economically disadvantaged areas. So crime incidence also depends on which neighborhood you are in within a particular city or state.

The table below shows violent crime and property crime rates for Hawaii, 3 states with the highest and lowest rates, and the average or United States Total in 2012.

Looking at the table above, Hawaii's crime rates fall neither in the highest nor the lowest. Violent crime is below average, while property crime is only slightly higher than the United States total, or slightly above average.

Given this data, it would be wise to exercise the usual precautions, such as being vigilant, installing anti-burglar security systems, locking doors, windows and keeping valuables out of sight. Violent crime isn't a big issue, so having private security could be as normally done by VIPs, for example. Driving around in a fancy car could still attract the wrong kind of attention, but only slightly higher compared to the US average.
