How long have you lived in the area?
About 4 years.
What factors influenced your decision to move here?
Did you want to stay on the windward side? Or did you look on the other side also?
I want to stay on the windward side.
Did you specifically want to be in Kaneohe near the mall, or any other reasons?
No, it's just a little quiet. Like they say, it's very convenient. It feels safer to be on the windward side.
How does it compare to where you lived before?
I lived in the beach front before, so it's different. I used to live in Kailua. I want to be in the area because it's not much different. It feels the same and I bought in the windward side.
What about traffic in your neighborhood? Like getting to stores, getting to downtown, commuting to work, those types of things?
It's better than Kailua.
Really? The traffic is pretty good then.
Mm-hmm. I have two highways, the Likelike 63 and also I can do Pali too. Not like in Kailua, you pretty much just have Pali.
So you really like it from the getting into town or into the other side aspect.
What about stores and stuff? I guess everything's around the Windward Mall? Do you have everything you need there? The shopping centers, that kind of thing?
Yup, and we have a movie theater. Not like Kailua, you only have one small one. Here we have the big one at the Windward Mall.
Any concerns with crime in your neighborhood?
I think it's everywhere, even in Kailua. It's just small break-ins, things like that. Nothing really major here.
So you're still comfortable, say, walking the dog after dark or that type of thing? You're fine in that neighborhood?
How about the schools in the area? Are you familiar with the schools?
Like most people, I think--if possible--people here would rather send their kids to private. Maybe elementary is okay, but once you come to middle or high school, if you're able, you go to private.
What's the noise level like? Any excessive noise from traffic, planes, neighbors?
You get the noise from the marine base. Once in a while you hear they have the big planes that they fly over and try to land but it's not bad. It doesn't come at night or anything like that. It's usually during the afternoon, but other than that, we don't have that noise. Not unlike the airport, things like that. So the noise is not a problem on this side at all.
What about when they're flying the jets from Kaneohe Marine Base? Do you hear the jets taking off and landing?
Of course. You don't hear them taking off and landing, but you hear them when they're above. But not that often.
What are the things you like best about the neighborhood?
It's small, quiet, and very convenient to everything, to everywhere.
What are the things that you would like to change about your neighborhood?
Maybe, they don't really have a good pedestrian walk and all the bike lanes. Maybe they should add those. We do have sidewalks, but it's not really functional. You know it's there, but some are not even aware of it. They should make a more real one.
What are the neighbors like?
Yeah, they're pretty friendly and mixed--some are white, Asian, and locals. They're pretty friendly. They know everyone. So they do keep an eye on things. But not many old people here. More like the working class, middle-aged.
What are your favorite nearby restaurants?
Any Asian, maybe. I eat a lot of Asian food. Haleiwa Joe's, maybe. I go to Willow Tree Kailua Korean Restaurant. There's Assagio. They have a good Chinese restaurant in Kaneohe, Pah Ke--it's very popular. I know they have Mexican, I've been there once or twice, but I'm not a big fan of Mexican so I forgot the name.
What about shopping? Where do you shop for groceries, other things?
Okay, and I guess you have the mall there for other things. Do you have to go into town a lot to shop? Are you able to get everything you want in Kaneohe?
Pretty much everything here, except for those very Asian things, like fish sauce, I go to Chinatown. But other than that, like vegetables, we have Farmers Market here twice a week. So the vegetables, things like that, you can get everything here at the Farmers Market in Windward Mall.
You mentioned fish sauce and things like that. Does the Safeway have like an Oriental or Asian aisle?
They do, but many Asians are picky with the brand. They don't carry every brand, maybe one or two. But in Chinatown, they have all kinds--you can get a specific pick. Every country pretty much uses fish sauce, but again, what brand are you using? Where does it come from?
Are there any events in your neighborhood or nearby that you hear about or you like to take part in? I don't know if they do a parade, Christmas parties, or those types of things?
They do, like in Kailua. They have a Christmas parade. They don't have something going on here a lot.
Where do they parade? Do you know that they parade at the mall or at the main road there?
Everything that happens here happens around the mall area. They have the main road so that's great there, between the Windward Mall and Safeway.
Would you recommend buying a house or a condo in your neighborhood?
Of course. I think it's still undervalued here in Kaneohe. People think Kailua is better because of the beach, but how often do you really go to the beach? Kaneohe is quieter and the price is still undervalued here. It's cooler and you have beautiful mountains. In Kailua, you don't really get that unless you're in Waimanalo. But here in Kaneohe, you always get that, these beautiful mountains. And then you got all the shops, even more than Kailua. You have the Windward Mall and the commute to everywhere is much faster. In Kailua, besides the beach, there's really nothing there.
What about rain with the mountains? I know sometimes places near the mountains get more rain. What's your rain situation there? What's the weather like?
It's always cool. On top of the rains, it's not really that bad. Usually when you see it, it comes and goes like within 10 minutes, 3-4 minutes, unless you're closer to the mountains. Yeah, we do get more rain than Kailua, but not like soaking rain or anything. It just comes and goes. It may get cool and green here.
So as long as you're not right up against the mountains, you're saying you get rain but it kind of passes over quickly?
