Neighborhood Interview from a neighbor who lives there.

What factors influenced your decision to move to Beachside neighborhood?

I like Kailua because it's a quiet town. Of course, the big draw in Kailua is Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach. And Beachside has quick access to Kailua Beach. So besides being a nice neighborhood, the access to Kailua Beach is a big thing. Lanikai has access to Lanikai Beach and quick access to Kailua Beach, but the traffic there--because there's only one road in and one road out, on holidays and things like that, tends to get really bad. Sometimes it would take 20 minutes just to get out of Lanikai.

With Beachside, you have access to Kailua beach and all the fun that brings without having to worry about traffic or anything. It's also convenient to Kailua town, and then getting on the Pali, getting on H-3, and those types of things. So there's a lot of great things about the Beachside neighborhood that influenced my decision.

How does where you lived before compare?

I lived on the mainland so there's kind of no comparison in the sense that the weather here, of course, is great. It's kind of amazing. In December or January when you're out on the water--also in Kailua Beach--it feels like summer still. Maybe it's a little cooler and sometimes you get more rain in the winter, but I enjoy the mild temperatures and being able to do water activities--kayak, surf, and those types of things year-round.

How is traffic in and around the neighborhood? For example, getting to stores, downtown, commuting to work, etc.?

That's one of the nice parts about Beachside because there are so many roads. If you look at it on the map, there's so many options to get in and out, to get to Kailua town, and like I mentioned, it's pretty quick to Pali and you can then go across into Waikiki quickly. You can get to H-3 if you have to go to Pearl Harbor. The airport is just 20 minutes away with H-3.

So depending where you work, the commute is very nice. I think if you work on this side, of course, it's nice. The H-3 never has traffic. So if you have to take H-3 to and from work, you'll never get stuck in traffic. The Pali has some traffic coming down, I know there's traffic at rush hour. At one of the lights, you'll hit some traffic, but it's not too bad. It's certainly nothing compared to the traffic trying to get out to, let's say, Ewa area at rush hour. The traffic around Kailua town--weekends and stuff--it's not bad, it never backs up.

Now there is going to be a Target store in the area. Some people are saying that's going to draw a lot of people to this area from Kaneohe and stuff. The traffic might get worse. We've got a Whole Foods now, which draws people, and so far, it still doesn't seem to be a problem. So hopefully, when the Target comes, then we still won't have a problem with traffic.

Do you have any concerns with crime in your neighborhood?

Nothing too much. I mean, I think there's a little bit of crime in all the neighborhoods. It's not major crime, but mostly petty theft, car break-ins, or that type of thing. But no, nothing that really concerns us so we feel pretty comfortable.

How are the schools in your neighborhood?

Schools are good, although most people from the Beachside will send their kids to one of the private schools as they get older. Le Jardin is a school that I know kids from Lanikai, Beachside, and different areas will go to. A lot of kids will commute to the other side of the island and attend Punahou where President Obama went and other schools that are over there. So the lower grade schools are pretty good. The high schools have mixed reviews and that's probably why, as the kids get older, a lot of them go to private schools.

What is the noise level like? Any excessive noise from traffic, planes, neighbors, etc.?

No, it's very quiet where I live. It's not a through-street, so the only reason you would be driving that street is possibly the park and to go to the beach. But the beach parking is actually further towards the Kalaheo Avenue, so most people don't even come down as far as where I live, so you get very little traffic.

Another nice thing about Beachside is the roads are extremely wide and you have sidewalks, and so it's very easy driving. So there's no noise from cars. You get some noise from helicopters flying over from the Marine Base. No qualms with neighbors.

What are the things you like best about your neighborhood?

Well, I do like that it's a quiet neighborhood. I do like the location, but the thing I like best is, of course, the access to Kailua Beach. We have a private gate you can go through to get into Kailua Beach very fast. You don't have to go to the closest public entrance.

You're right there on the beach. I don't live on the ocean but a block from it. So everyday, you can go walking on the beach, surfing, kayaking, or whatever you like to do. A lot of people like to walk their dogs because it's right outside your house. That's the big draw of Beachside.

What are the things that you would like to change about your neighborhood, if any?

I don't have many issues with the neighborhood. I know some people in certain areas of Beachside have a problem because people are using their private road, for example. Or they have their private beach access, but the public is using it. There's been some newspaper articles that have come out talking about whether it should be public use or private use. I think the people there wouldn't mind the public using it, but sometimes, they'll leave beer cans or make a lot of noise at night, or things that get annoying probably. If they'd just walk to the beach and back, it probably won't be an issue. That's for some people.

But for me, I'm not right next to a beach access and we have a private beach access that has a lock on it so nobody can use it, and so nobody goes through it other than people in the neighborhood. So that's not a problem.

Once a year, we have President Obama who stays in the neighborhood during Christmas. It's not a problem, but it's a lot of commotion and that type of thing. And you can't use the beach down by the end that he's staying at nor go in the water, but that's only 2 weeks at most. So it's really just a minor inconvenience. It's nice to see him staying there because I think it helps out Kailua--for businesses and things like that--because it gives it a name, because the President is staying there and enjoying Kailua.

What are your neighbors like?

Neighbors are very friendly. There are some retirees and some renters, but everyone's friendly. It's a quiet neighborhood, there's plenty of parking. It's near the beach, so people are pretty happy and friendly.

What are your favorite nearby restaurants?

Right down the street, there's Willow Tree, at the Aikahi Shopping Center--that's definitely a favorite. Then in Kailua town, you have Boots and Kimo's for breakfast, which is kind of famous. You have some other new restaurants, a New Chinese Garden. You have Assagio for Italian food. You have a selection of different pizza places including Bob's Pizza, which is kind of a New York-style pizza and a lot of people like that. So there's a lot of good restaurants without having to go all the way into, let's say, Waikiki. But of course if you can go into Waikiki, then it opens up a whole bunch of options also.

What about favorite nearby places to shop?

For groceries, Whole Foods. We were happy Whole Foods opened up. We could get a lot of things there that we couldn't get at where we normally go, which is Safeway. So for groceries, it's either Safeway or Whole Foods for us. For other stuff, there's not really a great option. We're not that close to a big box store. Target's coming, but right now, there are no big box stores in Kailua. So for other things, I tend to shop online a lot because it's just easier.

Are there any events in your neighborhood or nearby that you like to take part in?

There's nothing specific right in Beachside, but definitely, Kailua has their Kailua Town Parade every year and that's fun to watch. They have a couple different events each year in Kailua. But it's nothing specific for Beachside. But Kailua certainly has some things. It's a lot of fun. All the kids are there, and it goes right through Kailua so you can just ride your bike there or walk there, bring your little chair, and it's a lot of fu n to watch.

Would you recommend buying a house in your neighborhood?

I would definitely recommend it. I think you have to be a beach person. If you're not a beach person, let's say, if you don't go to the beach a lot, then maybe you're paying for a location that you're really not going to utilize. And then maybe you would prefer something with a view, an ocean view or something like that. If you like to do something on the beach, walk the dog, swim, kayak, surf, or any of that stuff, you just can't beat being walking distance to Kailua Beach. So I would definitely recommend it for people that are thinking about it.
